Caliban’s War by James S.A. Corey
My rating: 4 of 5 stars
Book 2 of The Expanse series and another good one. In this one, things are kicking off on Ganymede, the breadbasket of the solar system, with new improved monsters. Holden, clearly suffering from PTSD after the events of the last book, is back with his crew, and there are new characters, a Ganymede botanist, a Martian marine and a UN politician. I will be picking up book 3 immediately.
Abaddon’s Gate by James S.A. Corey
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
The third book in The Expanse series and we have people out for revenge and a mysterious Ring on the edge of the solar system. With the latter, humans being humans, of course, they’re going to disagree and potentially fight over it.
Cibola Burn by James S.A. Corey
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
I loved this one even more than I loved book 3, which I also gave 5 stars. I love how Holden continues to be mixed up (which anyone would be considering what he’s been through) and I loved the premise of this one and how it was a bit like a giant disaster movie in space.
Spoilers for anyone who hasn’t read Abaddon’s Gate.
The opening of the rings at the end of book 3, has opened up whole solar systems to humanity, so of course, they’re going to fight over it. The first habitable planet they find has squatters/settlers and one of the evil megacorps that inhabit the Expanse world isn’t happy. Holden and the crew are sent in to mediate, things, of course, go wrong. There’s tense action both on the planet and in orbit, dangerous alien fauna, alien artifacts, and disaster, I loved it.
Nemesis Games by James S.A. Corey
My rating: 5 of 5 stars
In this one, the crew of the Rocinante are split up, as the ship is in for some long repairs. This is the ‘let’s fill in on lots of backstory’ book, with us finding out more about the crew’s past. Of course, the galaxy and beyond is also in danger at the same time, with an offshoot of Belters rebelling.
Full marks again for how this series handles mental health issues.
