5 things I liked this week – 1.12.17

1. A tidy kitchen.

2. A good meeting with one of Z’s teachers at school.

3. Finishing The Dark Forest, it’s the second book in The Three Body Problem series and, in places, to me at least, they’re really not very good books, very sexist (and that’s not the only problem with the series) and part of me thinks “do I want to keep giving my money to an author I really disagree with on the really important topic of how to treat women?” (there’s a third book) but yes, on finishing the second book, I have just bought the third (I’m going to try and be charitable in case the rampant sexism is more of a translation issue than anything – the series is Chinese). Anyway, I liked finishing the second book this week because although I disagree with bits of the series, it has such a fascinating concept (what would humanity do, if we knew aliens would invade in 450 years?) that I have to keep reading to find out what happens next, even if many of the bits are read through gritted teeth. So, finishing the second book meant I was now two thirds of my way to knowing what happens (although if the ending of the third book is a cop out, I’m going to be so peeved).

4. Putting up the advent calendar again (styled by S this year).

5. Listening to The Strange Case of Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde on audiobook, I’ve read the book before but it’s been quite a while and I’d forgotten quite how good it was. I’ve downloaded Audible’s The Monster Collection, a bargain 30 hours for one credit and it has Jekyll and Hyde, Frankenstein and Dracula (even though I already have another, very good audio version of the latter, it was still too much of a bargain to resist and I love the gothic classics).
